The Audi V8 was the brand-leading four-door full-size luxury sedan that Audi produced in Germany between 1988 and 1993. It was the first Audi vehicle to include a V8 engine and the first to pair the Quattro technology with an automatic transmission. The Audi V8 represented several premieres for the Ingolstadt company. CLcompany is delighted to feature the facts about the Classic 1988’s Audi V8.
Flashback
In 1988, a car based on the third model generation of the Audi 100 and 200 arrived at dealers. The model was initially intended to be sold under the name “Audi 300” but was ultimately reduced to its engine shape name: V8. Audi had specially developed for this new model their first post-war eight-cylinder engine. Audi V8, the luxury sedan paved the way for the first-generation A8 and for the company to become a worthy opponent to Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

The Design
The Audi V8’s design was based on an enlarged version of the Volkswagen Group C3 car chassis known as the D1 or D11 platform, and it shared styling cues with the Typ 44 Audi 100 and 200 vehicles. The Audi V8 was different from the Audi 100/200 in that it had a special grille that was attached to the hood, redesigned bumpers and headlights, all-red tail lamps, an expanded wheelbase, a wider track, accentuated fenders, and a whole new interior. Additionally, only alloy wheels in the 15 to 17-inch range were available. There was also an extended wheelbase (LWB), or “Lang” in German, version of the V8 in addition to the standard-length variant. It was put together, at the Steyr-Daimler-Puch facility in Graz. The A8 would carry on this tradition and be available in “A8L” format.
