Best 4x4xfar is a term synonymous with land rover Defender. However, I beg to disagree.
This got to be in its true sense must belong to one and only Unimog. Or Should I say, the
most versatile 4x4xfar! Mercedes Benz Unimog Trucks.
Unimog (Universal Motor Great) was unveiled in the year 1946 and since 1952 has been a brand of Daimler AG. Unimog’s design classifies loosely under the forward control (FC) design enabling more space for cargo within the available wheelbase. Jeep debuted its forward control version of its CJ called the FC150 in the year 1956. Russians also had similar FC designs on UAZ-450 in 1958 and Landrover finally followed the suit by introducing 101FC only in the year 1972. It must be mentioned that amongst all of these, it’s only the Unimog that’s surviving even today serving its original intent while Russians are also carrying forward their FC heritage primarily in the form of a 4×4 van.
The Unimog’s characteristic design element is its chassis & suspension system. A flexible ladder frame with short overhangs, coil-sprung beam portal axles with a central torque tube with transverse links provided Unimog unmatched capability. While portal axles enabled extraordinary ground clearance, a coil-sprung suspension which is unheard of in a cargo truck provided superior axle articulation. The central torque tube provided safe housing to the mechanicals and transverse links provided superior axle location & flexibility. This unique design allowed the axle flexibility up to a commendable 30 Degree. Cab forward design with overall good visibility ensured, the driver could negotiate tough terrain and operate in those conditions without worry. These fundamental features more or less remain intact to date making it the most versatile utility truck in the world.
While the power came primarily from Diesel engines, early Unimog’s were also offered with petrol engines. These robust commercial engines were mated to a heavy-duty gearbox. While the original purpose of Unimog’s conception wasn’t for the military, it soon got its place with Army in various parts of the world. Unimog is a hot favourite with public works departments across the developed world. They are commonly used in snow removal, fire & rescue, material handling, mining, rail car moving and auxiliary power provider to name a few. The versatile PTO (power take-off) unit opens up a world of possibilities. With its multiple gear configurations, both in high & low range the vehicle can not only traverse varied kinds of terrain but also can power various kinds of jobs requiring various levels of speeds and torque assistance while on the move.
