Background
The Audi RS2 Avant was a totally unique fast car. The most remarkable aspect is perhaps the body type. The most popular car designs at that time were coupe, sedan, convertible, or hatchback. A station wagon was capable enough to transport the family and their belongings at that time.
On the other side, the project’s designers envisioned a future design that was cozy, roomy and had constant four-wheel drive. It was designed to be a sports automobile that could be utilized on any occasion. When Audi established a goal for itself, it dispatched a group of engineers to Porsche’s headquarters in Stuttgart.
Years in production– 1994 to 1995
The Design
Porsche-designed RS2 produced 311 horsepower at 6500 rpm from a 2.2-liter inline five-cylinder engine and drove a six-speed manual transmission. Kudos to its Quattro all-wheel-drive that allowed RS2 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 4.8 seconds and reach a top speed of more than 160 mph.
The RS2’s braking and suspension were both designed by Porsche, who also added massive Brembo four-piston calipers and lowered the ride height by 40 millimeters. The wheels and side mirrors were directly taken from a Porsche 964 Turbo, and as a result, “PORSCHE” markings are scattered around the car.
