The Mercedes–Benz G- Class W460 was introduced in Toulon, France, and went on sale in September 1979 with three engine choices and five body variants. These were first-generation cars and were offered in either a short or long wheelbase, with the short wheelbase offering a convertible option. Over the next decade, the engine and transmission choices were broadened or updated along with more and more optional extra-cost creature necessities like air conditioning, automatic transmission, power windows, etc. The G-Wagen first generation continued until 1992, although its replacement, the W463, was introduced in 1990.

- Pope John Paul II was one of Mercedes’ first civilian W460 customers. The Vatican equipped a cabriolet the Pope could stand up in during parades. The vehicle was affectionately called the Popemobile and this took the G-Class into the international spotlight.
