Volkswagen successfully used badge engineering in the 1970s with the first generation Polo, a rebadged Audi 50. Four years after the Golf’s first-generation launch, Volkswagen unveiled Golf’s smaller brother, the Polo. It was successful from the start unlike Golf. Clcompany is delighted to feature the facts about the Classic 1975’s Volkswagen Polo.
Flashback
The first version of the Volkswagen Polo supermini is known as the Mk1. The original car was styled by Italian firm Bertone and was produced at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg. The Volkswagen Derby was the name of the first generation, which sold 500,000 vehicles globally and had a similar exterior to the Audi 50.
Unlike the Golf, Bertone only made a few minor adjustments to the small Polo. Its two-box, hatchback bodywork had a vague resemblance to that of its larger brother. The grille was made of black plastic and had horizontal slats, and the headlights were round. It was only offered as a three-door car at launch. Volkswagen later introduced different body types.
The Derby received a facelift in 1979 that transformed it into a car resembling the Volkswagen Jetta by adding plastic bumpers, a new front grille, and a new dashboard.

The Design
Its simple appearance and small sizes made it a perfect opponent for the Italian and French cars, which mainly were the lords of the small segment.
Inside, the design was plain, a pair of vents in the center interrupted the dashboard. The automaker put a shelf underneath it that stretched the entire width of the vehicle. The only two gauges on the instrument panel were a speedometer and a fuel gauge. Volkswagen relied on warning lights for additional crucial information such as coolant temperature or oil pressure. The interior had a foldable bench in the back and two seats up front. Four adults could use it with no problems.
