The front-engine, rear-drive, 2+2 sports variant of the Volvo P1800 was a thing of beauty. It was manufactured by Volvo Cars in 1961. It was first marketed in a coupe configuration but was later made available as a station wagon known as a “shooting brake” in British. Clcompany is delighted to feature the facts about the 1961’s Classic Volvo P1800.
Flashback
Each of the Volvo P1800’s travels was unique. When Volvo needed a new vehicle for the US and European markets, the concept was born in 1957. Despite the success of PV544 and Amazon, the company continued to look for new business prospects. The increasing number of sports vehicles being produced on both sides of the globe motivated Volvo to develop its own model. Volvo lacked the resources necessary to develop one.
Years in production – 1961 to 1973
The Design
The P1800 has some of the best-looking lines of any automobile produced in the 1960s because of its stance, meticulous detailing, and smooth, beautiful lines. Volvo is a sometimes underestimated automaker, and they don’t produce sports cars all that frequently. There were recently updated gearboxes with overdrive options available as options; the overdrive effectively gave the P1800 a fifth gear, resulting in significant fuel efficiency benefits and significantly reduced stress and wear on the drivetrain. The drivetrain and engine turned out to be incredibly durable and helped Volvo establish a reputation for being a safe, dependable, and trustworthy manufacturer.
